This talk focuses on the Astaire-Rogers movies of the 1930s.
The sets were shaped by Art Deco. Like the dancers, the style of the settings and gowns, and the style of the style of the songs, complement each other. Many of the songs of the period were, themselves, as sleek and elegant, sophisticated, and romantic as Astaire and Rogers.
Michael Lasser is a writer, lecturer, teacher and critic. Roman and Littlefield will publish his latest book, co-written with Harmon Greenblatt, Say It with Music: The Art and Craft of the Great American Song book, Spring, 2024.
Between 1980 and 2021, Lasser was the host of the nationally syndicated public radio show, Fascinatin' Rhythm. In 1994, it won a George Foster Peabody Award for letting "our treasury of popular tunes speak (and sing) for itself with sparkling commentary tracing the contributions of composer and performers to American society."
