About Brookfield Zoo: The zoo was built over a period of 14 years, opening on June 30, 1934 to a weekend crowd of 58,000 people. Explore the unique zoo architecture featuring buildings in classic art deco style and bas relief. The zoo also features numerous sculptures, original way finding signs, and inlaid formica tables made by a team of WPA artists (Discovery Center). Come hear amazing facts about Brookfield Zoo and the Chicago Zoological Society’s 81 year history.
Tram Tours: Enjoy a historical tram tour narrated by Zoo librarian/archivist, historian, author, and CADS member Carla Owens. These tours will include a special emphasis on the Zoo’s art deco elements. Historical tram tours can accommodate 70 people, including 2 wheelchairs on each tour, so book early! Tram departs from the Discovery Center on the north side of the Zoo.
First Tour: 9:30 am – 10:30 am Second Tour: 10:45 am – 11:45 am
Parking: Parking is included for CADS picnic registrants. Enter the Zoo from South Gate. Your name will be on a list.
Lunch: Lunch will be served from 12 - 1:30 p.m. Included is a sandwich buffet, pasta side, cookie, and soda-beverage. Vegetarian meals of roasted vegetables are available upon request.
CHICAGO ART DECO SOCIETY BEHIND THE SCENES TOURS:
Behind the Scenes Tours: These tours are a special arrangement for CADS members and are not the same as the tours that are offered to the public. Seven different Behind the Scenes tours will be offered (see chart below). These are small group opportunities (maximum of ten people each) to interact with the zoo keepers in different areas. The zoo keepers will be discussing animal behaviors and in some instances feeding the animals.
These tours are fun, informative, and provide a chance to see the animals in closer proximity than usual, in addition to offering the opportunity to interact with a zoo keeper.
CADS has been given a total allotment of 70 slots for Behind the Scenes tours at a deeply discounted rate of $50 per person. Because we anticipate that the demand for these slots will be greater than the supply, we will organize a lottery to determine the assigning of the slots.
The lottery for the Behind the Scenes Tours will be held two weeks prior the picnic and you will be notified of your placement. Once your name is confirmed for the tour, payment can then be forwarded by check to our address below to finalize your spot.
